Ben and Janell Pearson
High School Teacher
My wife Janell and I moved to Winston, Oregon from Nampa, Idaho in 2017. We moved here to be near our only child, our daughter, Tirzah Myers and her husband, Dr. Joshua Myers, who had purchased a dentist practice in Winston. While here, the Myers family grew by two with the birth of our granddaughter, Layla and our grandson, Luke.
I retired early at 62 in 2018, and by the summer of 2020, I was becoming a little bored and needed some work. I contacted Pastor Travis Hunt of Camas Valley and he informed me of an opportunity to teach in a private Christian school being developed as he and others were sure Oregon was not going to open up the public schools in the fall of 2020 because of Covid. I had taught for approximately five years in the Boise Valley area but became disillusioned with the politics. I believed the Lord was pressing me to return to teaching, so I said yes. We opened the school in September of 2020 and have been with the school ever since.
I primarily work with the high school students, but the first two years I also worked with the middle school. I teach social studies, primarily US History, also American government, English, reading, Bible, chapel, and last year - drama. My wife, Janell, has also been with the school since the beginning teaching art, French, and the sciences of geology, archaeology, and minerals. We will be involved with teaching again this coming year of 2024-2025.
The work has been difficult at times and sometimes tiring, but the blessings have far outweighed it all. Meeting the students each year and developing a relationship with several has been a complete and utter joy from God, especially watching many students make either an initial commitment to Jesus, renewing a previous commitment, or deepening their current commitment.
